Cryo-suspension / Stasis Edit

A subcategory of ice transformation (freezing).

Cryo-suspension is the process of freezing a person, voluntarily or involuntarily, by technological means. It is a common plot device in science fiction films, television shows, books and comics.  Cryo-suspension may also be referred to as cryosleep; suspended animation; hypersleep; or cryostasis.

Hibernation typically describes a similar plot device, where an individual is cooled to near-freezing and her or his metabolic processes are slowed to near-zero.  The practical result is very similar: a completely immobilized person.

Stasis is the process of suspending a person's metabolic or biological activity.  This also features frequently in the same media sources as cryo-suspension.  In recent films and literature, stasis is frequently induced by means of nanotechnology.
